How to put your iPhone or iPad in DFU Mode

There is a common problem in Apple devices is that at times it gets turned off and won’t turn on again. Now to get rid of this issue or if you want to format you’re Apple device and install an old operating system. You need to know about the DFU mode or Device Firmware Update mode. This is the best way provided by Apple to save your phone from any software issue or if want to do something else with your phone. Read on to know how to put your iPhone or iPad in DFU mode.

However, if you are thinking that the DFU or device firmware update mode is similar to reset mode then you are wrong. On reset mode, the Apple device will not allow you to connect with iTunes or mac or windows computer. but when it comes to the DFU mode, it allows you to make a communication between your phone and iTunes or mac or windows computer. The mode does not even activate the bootloader and makes everything in a stable condition. The DFU mode helps your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch device to restored from any kind of state.

However, there is also a high chance that you might not get the successes with the DFU mode at the first go. Also, it needs quite a lot of practice to get mastered with the DFU mode. Just in case if you have failed with the DFU mode at the first attempt. Make sure you are not feeling unsafe and trying the mode again.

How to put your iPhone or iPad into DFU mode

  1. First of all, you have to plug in your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to your Mac or Windows PC via USB cable.
  2. On the second step, you have to launch iTunes from your windows pc or mac and make sure you are keeping it at the running stage.
  3. Now you have to turn off your Apple device if it’s not already turned off.
  4. At this stage, you have to press and hold down the On/Off button on the right side. You will find the button easily if you are using an iPhone 6 or later Apple device. For other iPhones, iPods, and iPads you will get the button on top. You have to press the button for like 3 seconds, sometimes it may take little longer.
  5. Once the device turned on now simply swipe the slide to power off slider to the right and you are good to go to the next step.
  6. Now again you have to press and hold down the On/Off button on the right side of your device for 3 seconds.
  7. After that do press and hold down the Home button on the front panel of your device. Make sure you are still holding down the On/Off button.
  8. Keep holding both of the buttons down for 10 seconds. Just in case if you have held the buttons for a quite long time and seen the logo of Apple. Well, then you have to start the whole process again.
  9. Now try to move from the On/Off Button and now try to keep holding the Home button for about 5 seconds.  Just in case if you get any message saying “Plug into iTunes” on your screen, then also you’ve to start the whole process again.
  10. However if after all the attempts if the screen of your Apple device stays black, then you are good to go. It simply means that your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad should now be in DFU mode.
  11. After your Apple device screen turns black, the iTunes should show pop up a message saying the computer have detected your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad device. And you are all set to perform the restore action.
  12. Also, one more thing to remember just in case if you see any logos on your device. Then probably you might be in Recovery Mode, and probably not in the DFU mode. However, it is advisable to try out the Recovery Mode before trying out the DFU mode.

How to put your iPhone X, iPhone 8, or iPhone 7 into DFU mode:

Just in case if you are wondering how to put iPhone 7 and the new Apple device in DFU mode then this section might be helpful to you. As we know iPhone 7 does not have the physical Home button. Instead, the Apple device has a capacitive Force Touch Home button. That is why the DFU mode functionality has moved to the volume down button from the home button. However here are the steps that you can follow:

  1. At first, connect your iPhone to a mac or windows computer.
  2. Launch the iTunes app on the computer.
  3. Switch off your Apple device if you have not switched off the device.
  4. Now Press and hold down the On/Off button on the right side of your iPhone for 3 seconds.
  5. Then Press and hold down the volume down button on the left side of your iPhone. Also, keep holding down the On/Off button.
  6. Keep holding both of the buttons down for 10 seconds. Just in case if you have held the buttons for a quite long time and seen the logo of Apple. Well, then you have to start the whole process again.
  7. Now try to move from the On/Off Button and now try to keep holding the Home button for about 5 seconds.  Just in case if you get any message saying “Plug into iTunes” on your screen, then also you’ve to start the whole process again.
  8. If the screen comes out to be black, you are good to go your Apple device is now in DFU mode.
