Android Oreo Update
A small Preface!
Keeping your Android device updated is important for the security & stability of your phone. But waiting for the newest update for your Android can sometimes be a taunting task. As Android updates are not released for all devices at the same time (like iPhones). These updates has to jump many hurdles before coming to our hand, such as sources for the OS from chip manufacturer, carrier approval, etc. Some times, the wait period can be so much taunting that you give up on that and won’t care about it. Some manufacturers are quick though! Also unlocked phones tend to get Android updates faster than their carrier counterparts.
This post is meant to fill the void of a complete list of a good database of devices and when they’ll be getting Android 8.0 updates.
Key Android 8.0 Update Features
Every new Android version comes with some new features, big or small. Here are the key Android Oreo features that you’ll find in the update.
- Notification Channels: Now you can group notifications from certain apps into one channel. This means better looking and better managed notifications bar.
- Picture in Picture: You can minimise the videos like you do in YouTube app with any app now.
- Multi Display Support: This one is self explanatory. You can launch some specific apps on other larger displays and continue work on your phone.
- Keyboard Navigation: Ability to navigate through apps & UI with the use of keyboard.
- Background Limits: Limit what an app can do when it’s on background (means, when not using the certain app).
Google Pixel Android Oreo Update
Pixel is the new Nexus!
Yeah, last year Google replaced Nexus range of smartphones with their own branded Pixel range, which essentially gives Google a tight hold on the software & hardware of their devices. That’s why last year’s Google Pixel & Pixel XL will be the first in line to receive Android 8.0 update. Here are the two devices from Pixel family that’ll be updated to Android 8.0 as soon as it’s released:
- Google Pixel
- Google Pixel XL
UPDATE 1: Android Oreo 8.0 Updates for both the Pixels is live. You can check for updates in System updates option in menu.
Nexus Android Oreo Update
Even though Nexus is past, Google won’t be forgetting the Nexus line. In fact the recent Nexus phones such as Nexus 6P & Nexus 5X will be some of the devices that’ll be up for the latest update of Android. Here are the list of Nexus phones that’s up for Android O Update as soon as it’s released:
- Nexus 6P
- Nexus 5X
UPDATE 2: Android 8.0 Oreo Update for both Nexus 6P & Nexus 5X is live. You can check for updates in System updates option in menu.
Samsung was previously infamous for not updating their devices on time. But it all changed recently as Samsung heard the customer voices and began updating their flagship devices on time. (Although we can’t say that for their low and mid tier devices).
If there’s one thing Moto has been doing right for past few years, it would be providing updates for their devices on time. Some of the mid range devices from Motorola has been on the frontline to receive Nougat & Marshmallow updates last time around. We can assume without any doubts that this will be the case this time also. Here are the list of devices that would be receiving Android 8.0 updates soon. We don’t have a timeline for any of the devices now, but we’ll add that as soon as Moto reveals that.
- Moto Z
- Moto Z Play
- Moto M
- Moto G5
- Moto G5 Plus
- Moto G4
- Moto G4 Play
- Moto G4 Plus
LG Android Oreo Update
Like Moto, LG was also the frontrunner to provide Android OS updates on time. In fact, Android Nougat was released with LG V20, not even a Pixel phone. That’s a credit by itself. LG have been providing updates on time since past few years. That would be the case this time around too. Here is the list of phones LG will be updating to Android O.
- LG G6
- LG V20
- LG G5
- LG V10
HTC Android Oreo Update
(List of HTC phones getting Android Oreo Update will be added soon)
Huawei seems eager to update their devices to latest Android version nowadays. Huawei has their own Android skin EMUI, which is pretty much like Xiaomi’s MIUI. Huawei’s Mate 9 is seen running a beta version of Android O even before it’s name is announced! (source) That’s feat by itself. So we can expect Android 8.0 on Huawei devices soon, that might be for the flagship models only though. Here’s an unofficial list:
- Huawei Mate 9
- Huawei P10
- Huawei Nova
- Huawei Mate 8
- Huawei P9
Honor is a sub brand of Huawei, which serves budget and mid range market. Huawei pushed Nougat updates earlier this year on the flagship line of Honor this year. We can expect that for Android O too. Take a look at this list:
- Honor 8 Pro
- Honor 8
- Honor 6x
- Honor 7
Xiaomi Android Oreo Update
Xiaomi provides periodic OS updates, which their lower end devices such as Redmi 2 which was released 2 years ago are still getting. But the thing with Xiaomi is that these updates are for MIUI, not essentially Android OS updates. If you don’t know already, MIUI is Xiaomi’s well known Android custom skin. MIUI too has versions like Android, which currently stands on MIUI 8.1.x. Most of their devices are updated to MIUI 8, but not essentially on the same Android version. Flagship Mi 5 series & Redmi Note 4 are on Nougat now, but Redmi Note 3 & other Redmi devices are still on Marshmallow. So we can expect only the flagship devices and the phones they’ve released recently to be updated to Android O soon. Here’s an unofficial Xiaomi Android O Update list:
- Mi 5
- Mi 5s
- Mi 5 Pro
- Mi 5c
- Redmi Note 4
- Redmi 4
- Redmi 4X
- Redmi 4A
OnePlus Android Oreo Update
OnePlus, known for flagship level devices on a lower price range is also known for it’s OxygenOS Android UI. Which is a clean UI with some add ons over the vanilla Android. Their devices which will be getting the Android Oreo update is listed below:
- OnePlus 5
- OnePlus 3T
- OnePlus 3
Lenovo.. and updates. Hmm, that doesn’t go well.
Lenovo has been so reluctant in updating their devices to latest version of Android that they’re not even providing an update for their previous flagship Vibe X3. Come on man, that one was your flagship. If you didn’t provide an update for that, should we even have to ask about other devices?
Watch the video below by C4ETech, where Ash talks about this in details while he asks about updates to Lenovo.
Lenovo doesn’t have an official list till now, we don’t expect much from them. We’ll add devices to this list as soon as they provide a timeline, if any.
