Lenovo Vibe X2, The Layered Phone : Quick Review

lenovo vibe x2

Lenovo has brought it’s latest weapon to India – Lenovo Vibe X2! Yes, the phone that made buzz when it was announced first at IFA 2014 with it’s unique layered design. The handset has a unique design, it is made up of 3 distinct colors and comes in a variety of variation in colors! Lenovo announced it will provide many add on layers of accessories on the back of the phone. Let’s have a quick review on the Vibe X2!

Lenovo Vibe X2 Review

Processor, Ram and Battery

Lenovo Vibe X2 is powered by MediaTek’s ultra powerful 2 GHz Octa-core MT6595 Processor with PowerVR G600 GPU, and comes with 2 GB RAM. In case you’re wondering why I used ‘ultra powerful’ for a MediaTek chipset, this chipset scores over 38K in the AnTuTu benchmark, and it’s 64 bit variant scores above 47K. (That’s just WOW!). NOTE: The benchmark on this phone may vary, and will be updated here when confirmed.

So the performance is more or less in par with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, One Plus One etc. This is one thing that Honor 6 must be really scared of, because MT6595 is much more powerful than HiSilicon Kirin 920 unit in Honr 6.

700 MHz Mali 450 GPU

1.7 GHz Octa Core MediaTek MT6592

The battery unit on the Lenovo Vibe X2 is 2300mAh, which might be a bit of worry for some, because the Octa-core powerhouse can be power hungry sometimes. The battery unit is non-removable.

Camera and Storage

Lenovo Vibe X2 comes with a 13MP BSI primary camera unit, which takes decent photos with it. It comes with 1080p video recording at 30fps. The front camera is a selfie friendly 5MP unit, which also promises good quality selfies.

The phone comes with 32GB internal memory, but expandable memory is missing.

Screen and Other features

Lenovo Vibe X2 features a 1080p full-HD display with 441ppi. The display is also average, but is very good at the price. And the display has no protection such as Gorilla Glass or Dragon Trail.

Vibe X2 runs on Android KitKat 4.4.4, with Vibe UI 2.0 running on top of it. If you have seen Xiaomi phones, you might be familiar with the Vibe UI in Vibe X2. There is no app drawer present in the phone, instead all the apps are presented in the home screen like iOS. This set up can make things a little bit cluttered, if you’re not a fan of folders. As a MIUI (which Vibe UI copied, almost all chinese manufacturers did) user, I don’t see any problem with this set up, you just have to be picky when it comes to folders. The UI is pretty fast and did not show a slight bit of lag. And Lenovo managed to include a nice touch with it’s new lock screen.

Oh, I forgot! The layered design, which is the main attraction of this phone promises us much more that looks. It can be thought of like a first step towards Project Ara (kind of!). Lenovo promises add-ons to the phone, such as a power bank, flip covers, speakers etc. to be added to the market in coming months. Let’s wait and see, hands crossed.

Price and Comparison

Lenovo Vibe X2 can be bought exclusively from Flipkart and is priced at Rs. 19,999. The competitors are Huawei Honor 6, Micromax Canvas 4+, Knight, and yet to be released One Plus One and Mi 4. Lenovo compares very well with Honor 6 and Micromax flagships, and has an edge over them with it’s layered design looks! It also does pretty well over the competitors when coming to the speed also, MT6595 didn’t disappoint.

Conclusion

Lenovo Vibe X2 out shines the current competitors with it’s spectacular looks and speed. But what will happen when the real monsters (OPO and Mi 4) are released? We have to take in consideration that both of these are going to be priced extremely competitive (OPO might be priced 18k and Mi 4 to be 15-16k), that sounds real trouble for Vibe X2. But, Lenovo can do pretty well with this device before these two releases! After that, who knows?

UPDATE : Lenovo Vibe X2 is sold out in just 2 days after launch! (Indian Express)
